Our Purpose

NAMLA’s Purpose is to Increase Minority Representation at All Levels of Landscape Architecture Practice and Academia.

NAMLA Plans to do this by Focusing on the Following 12 Actions:

  1. To connect clients to minority-owned landscape architecture businesses by providing a national directory of minority-owned landscape architecture firms on our website.

  2. To encourage and assist minorities in starting their own landscape architecture firms by providing small business startup grants.   

  3. To connect minorities to landscape architecture opportunities by listing jobs, internships and apprenticeships on our website and social media platforms.

  4. To provide micro grants to awardees who critically address the underlying causes of racial and class inequality in landscape architecture practice and academia.

  5. To provide statistics on race in landscape architecture to gauge minorities’ advancement or regression in landscape architecture practice and academia.

  6. To collaborate with allied organizations, institutions and businesses on programs that increase minority representation at all levels of landscape architecture practice and academia.

  7. To highlight and award the scholarly work of minority landscape architecture educators and graduate students.

  8. To provide portfolio competition awards that highlight the creativity, knowledge, and skills of emerging minority landscape architects and designers.

  9. To encourage and assist minorities in becoming licensed landscape architects by providing L.A.R.E. preparation grants and L.A.R.E. reimbursement grants.

  10. To diversify class inclusion and cultural movements in landscape architecture by facilitating an apprenticeship program as a non-degree alternative path to licensure.

  11. To provide an open source library for autodidacts on a full range of landscape architectural related topics.

  12. To grow NAMLA’s network of student chapters and start regional professional chapters.
